Young Athlete Returns to Netball after Foot Injury Australian netball player Charlotte Jasprizza took part in the National Netball Championships last year. Unfortunately, during one of the games Jasprizza was knocked out and wound up sustaining an injured sesamoid bone in the foot. Jasprizza’s injury forced her to spend five months in recovery.  However, Netball NSW revealed that Jasprizza will be featured on the list of players representing South Wales at this year’s Championships.

Jasprizza was nominated for her team in October of last year. In fact, Jasprizza survived several cuts just to ensure her place on the list. “It would be nice to get through the entire championship this time,” Jasprizza said. Though Jasprizza was unable to participate in the remainder of the 2013 championships, she was still named in the under 17 Australian development squad.

Sesamoiditis commonly affects active children and young athletes. If your youngster has sesamoiditis, it is a good idea to take him or her to a podiatrist like Dr. Henry Slomowitz of Paramus and Paterson. Dr. Slomowitz can examine his or her feet and determine the problem as well as work with you and your child to help them recover.

Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is a condition of the foot that affects the ball of the foot. It is more common in younger people than it is in older people. It can also occur with people who have begun a new exercise program, since their bodies are adjusting to the new physical regimen. Pain may also be caused by the inflammation of tendons surrounding the bones. It is important to seek treatment in its early stages because if you ignore the pain, this condition can lead to more serious problems such as severe irritation and bone fractures.

Causes of Sesamoiditis

· Sudden increase in activity
· Increase in physically strenuous movement without a proper warm up or build up
· Foot structure: those who have smaller, bonier feet or those with a high arch may be more susceptible

Treatment for sesamoiditis is non-invasive and simple. Doctors may recommend a strict rest period where the patient forgoes most physical activity. This will help give the patient time to heal their feet through limited activity. For serious cases, it is best to speak with your doctor to determine a treatment option that will help your specific needs.
