Foot SupportAccording to American Podiatric Medical Association spokeswoman Leslie Campbell, many people wear shoes that do not provide good foot support. As people become more physically active, so do the instances of foot ailments, especially for athletes.

Sports that make use of constant, quick side to side movements also increase the risk of ankle sprains, while activities such as long distance running can cause one to risk incurring heel spurs and pinched nerves. “We see more young children coming in because they play sports like soccer and wear cleats. These cleats are rigid, don’t absorb shock, and cause fatigue and should be worn as little as possible,” Campbell says. Dr. Campbell also advises against wearing cleats off the field and warm up adequately so the joints are supple in the shoe. Kinesiologist Dr. Eugene Charles also advises keeping feet elevated whenever possible.

Proper support is important, whether it’s for everyday walking or participating in exercise or sports. A podiatrist like Dr. Henry Slomowitz of New Jersey can make recommendations on how to care and find shoes that fit you, as well as help you with any foot pain you might have experienced from wearing ill fitting footwear.

The Importance of Proper Foot Support

Walking is an everyday function for both men and women, and in order to keep your body’s balance in order, you are going to need shoes that provide the proper kinds of support.

Poor foot support can cause pain and discomfort in the lower back, hips, knees, neck and shoulder. It also can lead to emotional stress, and physiological changes in the body. In order to avoid these problems, you must have proper foot support. It is recommended to either research proper footwear yourself or seek a podiatrist’s opinion before buying athletic shoes.
