Geraldo Rivera had surgery to fix his mangled footOn New Year’s Eve, Fox News anchor Geraldo Rivera turned to his 50,000 Twitter followers posting several updates on his gnarled foot. Geraldo claims it was a botched back surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York which caused his foot to disfigure.

“Getting ready for surgery on foot ruined by [Hospital for Special Surgery],” Rivera tweeted Tuesday. A photo of his mangled big toe set atop a copy of the day’s New York Times was included. “Patient is reasonably good spirits despite hair riot,” Rivera then tweeted with a selfie inside Mount Sinai Hospital, also in New York. On his third tweet, Rivera posted “On the mend,” accompanied with a picture showing his foot and wearing a brace. In his final tweet, Rivera stated “heading home!” while taking a picture of him in his crutches.

Foot surgery is a serious proposition that should only be done after a full medical consultation. If you are thinking about surgery to fix your foot injury, consider talking to a podiatrist like Dr. Henry Slomowitz of Paramus and Paterson. Dr. Slomowitz can present you with a range of treatment options and help you decide on the best one.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Foot and ankle surgery is generally reserved for cases in which less invasive, conservative procedures have failed to help with the problem. Some of the cases in which surgery may be necessary are:

- Removing foot deformities like bone spurs and bunions
- Severe arthritis that has caused bone issues
- Reconstruction to attend injuries caused by accidents or malformations

What Types of Surgery Are There?

The type of surgery you receive will be dependent on the nature of the problem you have. Some of the possible surgeries include:

- Bunionectomy for painful bunions
- Surgical fusion for realignment of bones
- Nerve removal for painful nerve endings

Benefits of Surgery

Although surgery is usually a last resort, when it is undertaken, if can provide more complete pain relief than before, and may allow you to finally resume full activity.

Surgical techniques have also become increasingly sophisticated. Such techniques like endoscopic surgery allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery times.
