Flat feet in children should not be considered a cosmetic problem. There are many reasons for this condition. I will speak of these different causes in a later blog. Have you ever walked in dry sand? It feels comfortable for the first few steps but after that it becomes exhausting. The reason being is that the sand absorbs all of your energy as you step down. The same thing happens with a child with a flat foot (sometimes called pes planus). The foot absorbs too much energy to allow the child to propel foward. For the child it is like walking uphill all the time. Complaints of "I am tired" , "can you carry me" are common. Custom made orthotics are a simple yet effective treatment for this problem.
